SIDEBAR

GDMO describes templates of information that define the managed object and its functionally. This particular description technique corresponds exactly to the CMIP management protocol’s services.

A preference of many network operators for SNMP makes GDMO problematic - for example, CMIP object attributes are allowed to be optional, whereas all parameters in SNMP managed objects are always mandatory. There are other significant differences that complicate incorporation of information models built around GDMO techniques for SNMP management applications.  For this reason, IETF’s STD 58 SMIv2 becomes important in the industry.

Current efforts to model in ITU and IETF are now “protocol neutral”.  Only the common subset of management protocol characteristics are assumed.
