This chart summarizes elements of the TMN Management Functional Areas (MFA’s) that TELE-WORX consults on. The left hand side of this chart is drawn directly from an ITU-T standard. The right hand side of this chart captures the essential objectives of each functional area “in a nutshell”.

Brian Crowe holds a patent (as a co-inventor with Steve Oliva at Sprint) for a Network System and Method for Automatic Discovery of Topology using Overhead Bandwidth (6,654,802). Topology and discovery are configuration management functions.

SIDEBAR

The management functional areas are commonly called “FCAPS” for fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security. Several organizations in the industry utilize a more dated concept of management functional areas called “OAM&P” for operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning. In spite of some “heated” arguments about mapping functions between these two worlds, there is little agreement...

Generally, it is accepted that OAM&P accounts for all the functions required to manage a transport network

TELE-WORX subscribes to the FCAPS “world”.
